Memories of Farnborough - The Big C Club - No.1 Camp Road in the 60s

The Big C Club operated in the late 60's (1966 to 1968) at 1 Camp Road, North Camp, Farnborough, it was during the time of Radio Caroline, and the music played by resident DJ Golly Gallagher was Atlantic Records, Stax Records, Tamla Motown and various soul UK and USA import labels. Golly was on the mailing list with Atlantic records so the music was really up to date with American Soul Music. The Big C Club resident DJ Golly, who went on to work with major record companies, organised Radio Caroline DJ's to perform regular at the Big C Club, like Johnnie Walker, Robbie Dale and Keith Hampshire.

The Big C Club was a members club (1000+ members) and teenagers came from all over the UK. The club was run by Laurie OíLeary who had the Speakeasy Club in London, and close friend of the Kray Bothers.

The live artists and groups that performed at the club were Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band, The Equals (Eddy Grant), Skatalties and we had the pleasure of Otis Redding, Little Richard, Jr Walker and the All Stars, Small Faces, Chris Farlowe , Amen Corner, PP Arnold, Edwin Star, Wilson Pickett, Eddie Floyd and The Hopscotch who went on to become the Average White Band, Rufus Thomas - just to name a few.

We revived the membership of the Big C Club last October (2007) with a reunion, gathering many of the people who went to the Club. These people are now in their early 50ís to early 60ís and they still enjoy the Soul Dance Music from the 60ís. Younger people are always welcome.
