Knellwood was built by William Knell, an early land developer, who purchased large tracts of land sold off by the Lord of the Manor in the 1860s.
It was constructed c. 1867 and in its earlier days was a private residence let out to high ranking military personnel. Many grand social functions were held in the house and the extensive grounds were often used for fund raising fêtes for St Mark’s Church and School.

After the First World War it opened up as an hotel and was eventually sold in 1947 and became a residential home for the elderly. It is Farnborough’s War Memorial to those who fell in the Second World War.
The house has been greatly extended and the chimneys have disappeared but it still retains the grandeur of former times and provides a tranquil setting for those who live there. The adjoining King George V playing fields were created from the sale of part of the Knellwood Estate.
